Economic Exploration
LONDON, Mon. (.10 a.m.).—The Paymaster General (Mr Hilary Marquand) leaves for South Africa on January 16 on the first of “tours oeconomic exploration,” says Reuters. Britain, he said, must decide how the output of heavy industries could best be used to increase Empire food supplies “so that eventually we can free ourselves of the present excessive dependence on the Western Hemisphere.” He wanted to ensure that every ton of British steel helped to produce food somewhere in the world.
