Melbourne Tramways Strike
A trial of strength between the supporters of direct action and arbitration in the settlement of disputes is being staged in the State of Victoria, where the Government has intervened in the Melbourne tramways strike. The strike, which has lasted 10 days, has forced half a million people daily to scramble to the city by train, bus and private conveyance. The Government proposes to provide emergency transport under police protection, and Cabinet is
reported to be meeting to consider the plan. The Tramways Employees’ Association has reacted by announcing that hundi-cds of pickets will be posted on all main highways leading to Melbourne, and the Australian Railways Union is to be asked to vote on a proposal to extend the strike if the Government proceeds with its emergency plan. A critical situation has developed, and the contest between constitutional and unconstitutional methods of strike prevention will be watched with close interest.
