Tiie Famous Spinning Jenny thousands of years all yarn used for the weaving of fabrics had been spun, a single thread at a time, either by hand or by means of the spinning wheel. But the year 1746 saw a revolutionary laboursuving device in the invention by James Hargreaves of the Spinning Jenny, a machine that enabled one person to spin twenty threads at once. The Spinning Jenny, however, was not received with any enthusiasm in the textile industry for many people were fearful that it could only cause extensive unemployment. Hargreaves’ workroom was raided and his machine destroyed. Undismayed, he moved to another part of the country and built a new machine, but he still met with opposition which kept him poor, although the community afterwards reaped the advantage ot a greatly improved industry. Immense improvements in the machinery for spinning yarn have long since relegated the famous Spinning Jenny to a place in the Museum. But in the great woollen mills of today —as in Tattersfield Broadloom Mills the intricate machines that spin hundreds of strong even threads simultaneously, use the same principle as that employed in Hargreaves’ original Spinning Jenny.
