Bigger Farlam For Australia CANBERRA, Mon. 01 a.m.).—Federal Cabinet is expected to deckle in principle on a bigger Federal Parliament. Some Labour members in borderline seats believe that redistribution of electoral boundaries, which would follow such a stop, would help them at the next election. These members are concerned about the political effects of the decision to nationalise trading banks. Recent discussions have suggested a House of Representatve of about 100 members, as against 75 at present, and a senate of about 48, as against 36. Parliament has the power to increase its own numbers. LEGISLATION THIS YEAR? 11 the Federal Cabinet and the Federal Parliamentary Labour caucus endorse the proposed increase, as seems likely, it is certain that the necessary legislation will be brought down this year. The new boundaries would thus be ready for the elections at line end of 1949. The chief argument in favour of a larger Parliament is that some federal clecSorales have new nearly 100.000 people within their boundaries. Some opposition has developed among the smaller states, who claim that redistribution would swing power even more to the large Eastern states. La bow Attack Of Uniform Taxation BRISBANE, Mon. (11 a.m.l—The Premier of Queensland (Mr Hanlon) states that the Labour Governments of New South Wales and Queensland are planning an assault on the present taxation monopoly enjoyed by the Federal Labour Government. Mr Hanlon, who has just returned from a conference in Sydney with the New South Wales Premier (Mr McGirr), said that both states, which were vigorous opponents of uniform taxation, would seek restoration of state taxation at this year’s Premiers’ conference.
