Morrison Queries Russia's Motives
Marshall Plan
LONDON, Sun. He could not understand why Russia was impeding European examination of the Marshall plan unless she believed that more misery in the world would help revolutionary Communism, said the Lord President of the Council (Mr Herbert Morrison) in a speech. Britain would like active cooperation with the Soviet for peace and mankind’s social wellbeing, he said, but Britain could not be expected to Lie down to untruthful, malicious, propaganda attacks by Russian Communists and the world’s Communist parties which acted as servile automatic outposts of the Soviet Foreign Office.
Country after country in Eastern Europe found itself subject to undemocratic, unrepresentative Communist Governments, with the suppression of other political parties and the freedom of the press, wholesale witch-hunting, and even unjudicial execution of non-Communist politicians.
“Nobody seeks to upset Russia’s internal security,” he said. “Can she not begin to discard the provocative policies which risk war and impede mankind’s economic recovery and progress?”
