Hatea Water Filter Tests

Early next week filtration tests will be commenced to ascertain if the odour and taste of Hatea River water can be eliminated. This follows the decision reached at a special meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council, field early in December. when the whole question of effecting improvements to the water was discussed.

Suggested by (lie medical oflicer of health for Northland ('Dr J. L. Newman i. the filtration, if successful, will result in purer, more palatable water. A small gravity filter plant capable of treating 60 gallons an hour will be used for testing purposes. However, the water so treated by this small plant will not be fed into the mains. If filtration treatment is successful the council, following the decisions of its special December meeting, will go into ways and means of obtaining a plant large enough to treat all the Hatea River water used in the Whangarei auxiliary supply.
