Walked North To Cape Reinga

An Auckland couple, Mr and Mrs J. A. Manning, of Milford, have just completed their first holiday in Northland.

They came north by service car but hitch-hiked back to Whangarei where they joined the train. From Kaitaia they walked north through Te Paki Station to Cape Reinga.

Camping there for a short period they commenced a leisurely return trip to Whangarei and Auckland. ■, They chose the hitch-hiking mode of travel and decided on the East Coast route for the journey. They passed through Mangonui, Kaeo, Kerikeri and thence to the Bay of Islands.

Bad weather here forced a temporary hold-up and they remained in the area for seven days.

During this time they undertook the wel£*known “cream trip” by launch round the bay, and as a fair sea was still running became near to being seasick.

From Russell they made their way down the main road to Whangarei arrived here shortly after 2p.m. yesterday. After a meal they left by bus for the Whangarei Heads and today they returned to Auckland by train.

Ardent camera users. Mr and Mrs Manning undertake their own developing and printing. They have a busy time ahead of them when they return home. As a result of their Northland holiday they have 22 films to process. “Very surprising,” was their comment when asked their opinion of Northland scenery. Mr Manning remarked that it was vei'y varied, mentioning the area around Kaitaia where it was possible to see gumlands on one side of tho road and apparently rich farming counti’y on the other. Mr and Mrs Manning, when on the road, do not thumb rides. They just keep walking and when a ride is offered accept it. By adopting this means they can please themselves how far they travel in a day, and also with whom they make the motor journeys. Previously Mr and Mrs Manning had not been further north than Helensville.
