Fine Photographic Studies Exhibited

Photographic studies entered in the Bledisloe Cup contest are on displayin J. W. Court’s premises, in Whangarei. The entries in the competition, which, is held annually, are from eight different camera clubs. Each club is restricted to 12 exhibits which represent the cream of the year’s photography in the country. The champion print by Spencer Digby. of Wellington, is named “The Chorister” and is a masterpiece in expression and treatment. Portraiture figures prominently in. the exhibition and some of the studies really live. One of the portrait prints has been exhibited in England and compared favourably with the work done there. The landscape and seascapes are gems of New Zealand’s finest scenes presented at their best by amateur and professional photographers. The Whangarei Camera Club has also exhibited a selection of its year’s work and the studies, though limited in size, are considered to be of a high standard. >

One still life in particular, a study named "Brass,” is really striking in effect, with the light and toning blended to suit the subject. The Whangarei club did not enter in the Bledisloe Cup competition as it is only twb years old, and members feel that they should have more experience in treatment of their subjects before entering in the national competition.

Some of the senior members, however, are producing studies that are pleasing to the layman’s eye at least, and the technique of satisfying judges’ requirements can be developed.
