Quick Repairs To Wyatt Earp

MELBOURNE, Thu. (11 a.m.).—The Australian Navy plans to repair the polar exploration ship Wyatt Earp within a week and send her back to the Antarctic with the least possible delay. She returned to Melbourne yesterday from latitude 52 south with a 40foot canvas patch on her side. Repairs will be carried out at the naval dockyard, Williamstown, because of a threatened strike by ship painters and dockers in private yards, planned for tomorrow. The ship’s side has a crack 39 feet long, but her captain (Lieutenant Commander Oom) says the damage is “normal, such as might occur in trials.” Members of the ship’s company said three t 0 four inches of water swilled across cabins and the engine room after seas had opened the hull. The men bailed the water out of portholes while the pumps worked in the bilges. ~ , One crew member said that nearly everyone aboard was seasick. Official sources deny that the Australian Government is seeking replacement for the Wyatt Earp in Ameiica.
