Streams Drying Up In Canterbury Heat
CHRISTCHURCH. Thu. (P.A.).—The highest temperature of the summer. 91 degrees, was recorded in Canterbury yesterday afternoon.
It was the hottest day for 10 years. Waiau had a recording of 97 degrees, but it was cooler there yesterday than on New Year’s Day, when the thermometer touched 99 degrees. Tens of thousands of fish will die in South Canterbury streams if rain does not fall soon.
Some of the smaller rivers are rapidly drying up, and the curator of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (Mr F. W. Grayburn) said yesterday that as many fish as possible were being shifted from isolated pools in dry stream beds. After the prolonged drought the country is tinder dry, but there were no serious fires yesterday.
