Bums Fails To Extend Title-holder, McKenzie

AUCKLAND, Wed. (P. A.)—-Except for one set in his match this morning with the New Zealand champion, R. McKenzie, A. S. Burns failed to fulfil the prophecies that he would extend the title-holder. . Stroking fluently, . McKenzie played an unflurried game to take the match, 6—o, 6—l, 3—6, 6—2. A strong north-easterly wind was the only factor detracting from today’s conditions.

Burns played better in the third set which he deserved to win. Play between E. D. B. Lusk (Auckland) and O. M. Bold (Hutt Valley), which the latter won B—6,8 —6, 6—3, 6—2. was often a dour struggle and rather closer than the points indicated. I Game after game was decided from l the baseline. I Jeff Robson (Otago) carried on his sequence of straight set victories by eliminating the determined Waikato player L. P. Roach, 6—o. 9—7. 7 —5. Roach on occasions troubled Robson with 'awkward midcourt lobs, forcing him into errors. VETERANS’ FIGHT The veterans Pattinson (Canterbury) and Angas (Wellington) had to fight hard in the later stages of the men’s doubles match with Bowden and Huckstep (Auckland). They won the first , two sets fairly easily, but the Aucklanders settled down. after this and took the match to four sets. There were excellent net rallies. Ttye Aucklanders won the third set 6—3, but 'their opponents took control to win the fourth 6—3 after the Aucklanders had led 3—2. In the women’s doubles Mrs Painter and Mrs McVay (Wellington) easily disposed of their 16-year-old opponents, Misses Burke (Taranaki) and Becroft (Auckland). The winners pierced the indifferent defence time and again. MEN’S SINGLES Quarter-Finals R. W. Smith I Auckland) beat R. M. ' Matusclika (Waikato). 7—5, G—l. 6 —3, fi—4; J. E. Robson (OLago) beat W.
