Disabled Trawler Rescued In Storm
SYDNEY, Tues. (11 a.m.) — Distress flares seen amid lightning Hashes by a surf club member off the coast north of Sydney last night resulted in the rescue of a disabled trawler by the pilot steamer Captain Cook. The trawler, manned by four Italians. only one of whom could speak English.- was fishing off the entrancq to the Hawkesbury River when the engine failed.
She drifted helplessly for four hours in driving seas, which broke over the vessel. North Narrabeen Surf Club members decided against attempting a surfboat rescue because of the distance and conditions, but notified the Sydney harbourmaster.
The Captain Cook had little trouble in locating the trawler because of Verey flares. After several attempts a line was sent aboard, and the trawler was towed back to Sydney in a violent thunder and lightning storm.
