Gris' 900-Mile South island Tour Cost 3 / 5
DUNEDIN, Tue. (P.A.) —Two Dunedin girls have just finished a South Island hitch-hiking tour 0f.900 miles, which cost them 3/5, and they walked only 35 miles during the whole trip.
Miss D. Woolman. a university student, and Miss K. Ingles, a nurse, have been touring for nearly a month in easy stages, and their low travelling expenses have been the outcome of the generosity of motorists in giving them lifts. Their main item of expense was having to pay 2/6 for a bus fare on their way to Nelson, which would have been avoided had not the manager of the bus depot spotted them on -their arrival, after the bus driver/-had gen-
erously allowed them to travel “steerage" in the luggage compartment. On arrival at Nelson they had only Id between them, and a Christmas dinner invitation was accepted gladly. On Christmas night they could not afford a meal, and for breakfast on Boxing Day a loaf of stale bread was eaten. { This state of penury ended when they were both employed as housemaids at a hotel, and were able to earn sufficient money in a few days to set their feet on the road again.
