O'Callaghan Wins Kaitaia Tourney
KAITAIA. Tue. (Sp.i—O. O’Callaghan, a Hikurangi skip, led the team which won the Kaitaia Bowling Club’s New Year full rinks tournament. He was supported by J. Steen, Quinn and H. Carr. The winners beat E. Clark, D. Boreham, W. Ycndell and J. Gardiner 25—15 in the final after Clark had downed J. B. Dykes, A. W. Bird. T. Cave and M. Waddell 21—15 in the semi-final.
Six games were played, with five wins required to qualify for post-sec-tion play. ' O’Callaghan, Clark and Dykes were the only qualifiers out of 12 rinks. Each won five games. Dry and hot weather made the green fiery and a strong cross-wind on the second and third days did nothing to assist the players. O’Callaghan drew the bye for the semi-final, but ran true to form in the final and led all the way. In the -earlier match Clark established a lead of 19 —3 over Dykes, but the latter picked up 11 points in three heads and had a much improved tally on the board when the last head had been played.
