R. Gibson Winner At Maungaturoto
MAUNGATUROTO, Mon. (Sp.) R. Gibson (Dargaville) won the full rinks bowling tournament at Maungaturoto on Saturday. In the final he defeated J. McLeod (Maungaturoto) 16—6. Brief showers during the early morning did not affect the green, which was playing moderately fast and true with plenty of draw. “Judging the green” was made difficult by a strong gusty crosswind which was inclined to hold a fine drawing bowl against the bias. Apart from this conditions were ideal. Rain which threatened from an overcast sky did not eventuate. The five teams which qualified for post-sectional play were:— S. Jujnovich, L. Markham, W. Lowther and W. Lethbridge (Ruawai), 5 wins; R. McMurchie, A. Worthington, N. A. Robison and J. Allen (Maungaturoto), 4 wins; R. Heatley, J. Bryljevich, N. Finlayson and J. McLeod (Maungaturoto), 4 wins; N. Robinson, E. Young, B. Monroe and R. Gibson (Dargaville), 4 wins; F. Sheerin, E. Jeffs, J. McCann and H. Shirley (Ruawai). 4 wins. UNLUCKY W. Lethbridge's team was the unluckiest on the day. The only undefeated team in the five qualifying rounds, it failed badly in its first elimination round and was defeated 9—2 by J. Allen. Gibson ran into an early lead over Shirley and at 12 —2 after five heads the game was abandoned. Two Maungaturoto teams, J. McLeod and ,T. Allen, fought out a close contest and the issue was in doubt until ihe final head when McLeod came through to win by 5 —4. McLeod’s win. which was due largely to- sound leading by R. Heatley, a first-year player, was somewhat unexpected, as Allen had been playing very steadily. McLeod had no chance in the final against the experienced R. Gibson, whose team played consistently sound bowls throughout the day. The 18 teams which took part were:—D. R. McKay, C. McLeod. Abercrombie and Cooper (Waipu), R. Gibson and Appleton (Dargaville). T_ Cannon. W. Lethbridge. 11. Shirley and B. A. Wood (Ruawai). L. V. Corpe (Faparca), and M. Finlayson. J. Allen. W. Anderson. J. McLeod. L. Worthington. J. Cockcrton and K. J. Mountnino (Maungaturoto).
