NEW DELHl.—Pakistan has offered I India a military alliance with joint j staff meetings under the chairmanship ; when necessary of the Chief of the: Imperial General Staff (Field-Marsnal 1 Viscount Montgomery) says the Daily j Telegraph correspondent in Peshawar, j The proposal will be discussed on Friday when the Joint Defence Coun- j cil meets at Lahore. The Governor-General of India j (Earl Mountbatten) is reported to be | urging the Indian Government to give j the proposal serious consideration. j Invading tribesmen have penetrated j to within 15 miles of Jammu, in south 1 Kashmir, the present capital of the ] Maharajah of Kashmir (Sir Huri j Singh). Tribesmen attacked state! forces at Nawansharh. to the south- • west of Jammu. Invaders elsewhere in the Jammu j district have used a pause in opera- j tions to consolidate and reinforce their i positions along a 70-mile front stretch- | ing north-west to Mirpur.
