Serve Meals At School

AUCKLAND, Sat. (Sp.) Midday meals have been provided by the Parent-Teacher Association to over 100 children at the Takapuna Primary School.

The meals consist of a vegetable salad, fruit, wholemeal bread with a yeast spread, honey and a patent foodgiving vitamin 81, a vitamin A and D capsule, and as much milk as the children can drink.

The association raised £2OO to equip the dining room and kitchen. The president of the association (Mrs M. A. Brendon), who initiated the scheme, raised £l4l by personal appeal. Only 70 of the children go home for lunch, and the association wishes to avoid the practice of giving the children money with which to buy their lunches.

The scheme can cope with 100 chiL dren only, and there is a waiting list of over 100.

The meals are prepared by the mothers of the children. COST 6D A DAY

The 100 children chosen by Mrs Brendon are those of mothers who have offered to help in preparing meals and cases of hardship and delicacy. The cost of each meal is sixpence. Mrs Brendon feels that the idea should be a national one and she intends to compile medical and dental histories of the children to show the benefit of the scientific diet. Children whose mothers say they will not eat a thing at home clamour for more at the school luncheon.

The ages range from five to 13 years. The children take it in turn to say grace.
