'Federal Gov! May Force Fares Up
SYDNEY, Sat. (11 a.m.)—The Federal Government has gazetted regulations to allow it to win its fight with Ansett Airways on fares and freight rates.
Earlier it had backed dqwn before Ansett’s point-blank refusal to raise the company’s fares 20 per cent on services between Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Under the new regulations, the Minister of Air may fix fares and freight rates on private airlines and may refuse the use of aerodromes to companies which fail to observe these charges. The Director-General of Civil Aviation will have authority to suspend the licences of operators who fail to comply with the fixed charges. In Melbourne last night, the Minister of Air (Mr Drakeford) declined to say whether he intended to use these powers against Ansett Airways.
