BUOYANT TONE OF NORTH STOCK SALES
DURING the past week Northland stock markets maintained the buoyant tone which has prevailed for most of the month. Values fluctuated slightly in the cow beef and boner sections, where a further firming was reported from one major sale.
j I Dairy cows and heifers close to prolit and in milk were yarded in modI crate numbers, meeting a keen demand, with prices ranging to £l4/15/for good quality cattle. Cows and heifers in milk sold to £l2/10/-, the inquiry for these cattle being firm. In the beef sections large numbers of fat cows were offered and competition was keen, prices ranging up to £IG for heavy sorts. Ox beef was quoted at Whangarei at about £2/15/- per 1001 b, with best cow beef at about £2/4/- to £2/5/- per 1001 b. These figures were on a par with last week's rates. Eoners sold particularly well, prices being considerably in advance of the schedule rate of £l/8,/G per 1001 b. Heavy boner cows matle to £9, with boner bulls realising to £l3/10/-. |
Store cattle were penned in moderate numbers, values being firm. With the advance of the dairying season greater numbers of fat pigs were offered, heavy baconers making to £6/9/-. Good stores, slips and weaners sold readily at late rates. Few fat sheep were on the market. 2-tooth wethers changing hands at £l/14/-. The mutton supply has improved considerably within recent weeks but values have remained fairly stable. Favourable weather conditions, with timely rain falling just when dryness was becoming apparent, have continued through the month and the primary producing industry is generally in good shape. As a result the demand for most classes of stock has been strong and prices have been firm.
