WHANG Alt El CENTRE The monthly meeting of the Whangarei Centre . Women’s Institute wa’s well attended, Mrs Webb presiding. Letters of thanks were read from the Rotary Club for the aid of the Drama Circle at their entertainment, and from English people thanking members for food parcels. Two parcels are to be despatched to Ely Institute, the English link, this month. Mrs Horn’s letter regarding the ACWW Conference in Amsterdam was read. Mrs Webb gave a full account of the Whangarei Federation Council meeting. Suggestions lor alterations in the institute monthly paper "Home and Country" were discussed, many ideas for improvement being advanced. Birthday posies were presented to Mesdames Taylor, Wilding and Jordan. The roll call, "A motto,” brought forth some rare and good sayings. Competitions resulted: Hand-made handkerchief, Mrs Matthews 1, Mrs Thomson 2. Flower: Mrs Hirtzel 1, Mrs Thomson 2. A reading, "A New Zealand Heroine, Mrs McLean, Nurse, of Great Barrier," was given by Mrs C. Hedley. The drama circle entertained. Mrs Roland (violin) and Mrs Webb (piano) rendered "When My Dreams Grow Old;" recitations by Mesdames Quarrie and Thomson. A sketch, "Domestic Tragedy," was presented by Mesdames Crawshnw, Rolands and Webb. Mrs Taylor reported that the bring and buy held in the YWCA Hall on November 20 was very satisfactory. Mrs Webb thanked all who donated articles for the sales tables. Mesdames Hedley and Thomson were in charge of the. sewing table. Mesdames Calder, Fulljames and Courtney produce, and Mesdames Smith and Taylor cake stall.
