Record £206 Gate At Waimate Show

WAIMATE NORTH, Sat. (Sp.).—Although overcast, the weather remained tine for the Bay of Islands P. and I. Association’s annual show in the beautiful and historic puriri-groved showgrounds at Waimate North today.

The gate was a record for the show, the figure of .£206 being £2O better than last year’s previous best. Hundreds of cars, many trucks and buses gave evidence of the high degree of popular support from the people of the county. Even with extra sheep and cattle yarding available as a result of members’ working-bees, pen space was taxed to capacity with record entries. Judges, on the whole, were more than pleased at the standard of animals shown, the small amount of criticism heard being limited to preparation by exhibitors.

Outstanding item in the schedule was the Northland Fat Lamb Championship, which included the Dominion Meat Board’s competition for export lambs. This was given unquestioned interest through the fact that last year's champions. after having been killed and prepared at Moerewa freezing works, were exported to Smithfield Market, London, where they won for Northland (for the first time) the coveted North Island Shield.

Instead of the 25 pens entering last year, today saw no less than 65 pens in the fat lamb competition. The three lambs in a numbe,r of the best pens will be killed and dressed at Moerewa, where judging on the hooks will have been completed in time for an exhibitors’ field and demonstration day on Monday afternoon. Also to be seen will be the best pens from the Kaikohe show’s fat jamb championship, and baconer and porker championships. THE CHAMPIONS Hunters.—Bay of Islands Hunting Championship: J. McLean.
