Broken Axle Delays Train From Auckland
A delay of three and a half hours was caused last night to the AucklandWhangarei train which normally arrives at Whangarei at 1 a.m. An H class wagon loaded with stock for the North broke an axle between Oakleigh and Portland, and became partially derailed. The stock were released and no damage was caused to the permanent way. Members of the railways maintenance staff were called to the scene of the accident early this morning, and the damaged wagon was lifted and moved to the Oakleigh siding. Traffic is running to normal schedule today. HEAVY TRAFFIC Passenger traffic was very heavy on the Northland line over yesterday and today. The afternoon train from Auckland last night had five additional carriages attached, making seven in alt, to cope with the demand. The train from Auckland which arrived in Whangarei at 8.30 this morning had five carriages, four of these being extras. Between 80 and 90 of the passengers were for Whangarei. Yesterday 40 trucks of cattle for the Waikato passed through Whangarei. The beasts were mainly of the store class.
