Northland .Rugby League members and supporters turned out in force to attend the anual smoke concert in the Savoy dining rooms last night. "I think you are on the crest of the wave and it’s up to you to keep there." said the president (Mr J. F. Johnson). "Keep up the spirit and initiative you ve got today and you can’t go wrong." Trophies were presented by Mr Johnson to the following:— Senior championship (Executive l Cup). Takahiwai (Mr 11. Pirihi). Junior championship (Davidson Cup:. I Portland (Mr C. Harris). Senior ICO. Cup. City (Mr C. Payne). Junior K.O. Cup. Portland (Mr C. Harris). Mr A. Hooker’s specail trophy for the pluckiest player. Ron Burke, a Takahiwai schoolboy. "League is a good second to Soccer —the only game." said Mr J. Newton. "Tlie Northland Rugby League is proving itself. There is something in the game which isn’t in other games. “Nothing should be placed in the way of anyone wishing to play any sport." It did not matter what sport was played, as long as sportsmen played ihe game, said Mr W. Hedley. Items were given by Mr E. Dennis (songs), Mr E. Gilbey (song), and Mr W. Cotterill. Mr A. L. (JO a.m.) —Representatives of the French and New Zealand Rugby Leagues met at Ilkley and made final arrangements for the New Zealanders’ visit to France after Christmas. Reuters says. They also discussed the possibility of a French team visiting New Zealand in 1948.
