Crossed Atlantic In 27ft Schooner
(Noon) MARSEILLES, Oct. 17. A 45-year-old Frenchman, Jean Gau, arrived at Marseilles from New York after a 20-week voyage alone in a 27ft three-masted schooner which he built in his spare time; Gau left New York on May 26 for his home town, Serignan. Severe storms, however, damaged the craft and forced him to make for Cartagenau. “A compass, a map, the stars and my own endurance were my only equipment,” he said. He worked as a dishwasher in New lEork, saving money for the crossing. He made a lone crossing in 1937 when his vessel ran aground off Cadiz. He plans to cruise round the world when he has repaired the schooner. , >
