Westrport Watersiders' Output- Record

(Special.) WESTPORT, This Da-.y “If we had better gear and land transport problems could be overcome, we could increase our present loading rate from 20 tons of coal a man-hour to 30 tons,” said the secretary of the Westport Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr W. Elliot).

The Westport workers had increased their output to 20 tons as part of their effort in the Aid for Britain campaign.

Any increase in the Westport output would have an immediate bearing on the national economy, as it was a vital link in the production chain. The watersiders, who were on call 13 hours a day, handled up to 400,000 tons of coal from the Buller district annually.

Coal ships had frequently left Westport fully loaded on the same day loading commenced.
