NZ's Greet Trading Record And Results

(1.15 p.m.) . LAKE SUCCESS, Oct. 3. . Mr James Thorn, New Zealand High Commissioner to Canada, told the Assembly’s Economic and Financial Commbittee today that New Zealand, in proportion to its population, was the greatest trading nation on earth. He was' discussing a report of the Social and Economic Council, and said New Zealand was obviously very interested in any attempt to rehabilitate devastated areas and strengthen the economies of undeveloped countries. New Zealand, in 1946, exported goods worth nearly £100,000,000, and imported nearly £72,000,000 worth. This trade enabled New Zealand to maintain comparatively high standards of living, and she was most anxious to sustain and increase it. Some criticism of the progress of the Social and Economic Council was justified, but it would have been a miracle if it had made no mistakes in view of great difficulties which confronted it from the beginnings.
