Cintra guests Invited To Remain

Cintra guests, who received a day's notice yesterday, have now been invited to remain at the hotel, if they are prepared to put up with the inconveniences caused by lack of staff and alterations to the premises. After discussing the situation with them this morning, the proprietor (Mr O. James) invited them to remain at the establishment if they desired. Before this invitation had been issued, most of the guests were busily engaged in the task of packing up their belongings. In the finish, only one guest checked out. Yesterday they received notice to vacate their rooms by 9 o’clock this morning, as the hotel was to be closed for alterations. Prior to this, some of them had objected to a proposal to increase the tariff from £2/5/- to £3 per week. STAFFING DIFFICULTIES

In an interview yesterday, Mr James said that staffing difficulties had become acute and the establishment was being run at a considerable loss. As he had not been able to obtain a cook and his manageress had been compelled to undertake this work, and as he was desirous of having substantial alterations made to the building, he had decided to close the hotel. This morning, Mr James said he was still unable to obtain staff, but, if the guests were prepared to put up with present conditions, and suffer the inconvenience of alterations, they were invited to stay. Tariffs at two other private hotels in Whangarei have risen, or are expected to rise in the near future.
