STOCK LOSSES HIGH IN N.Z.

(Special) AUCKLAND. This Day. Compared with the large animal population, the number of veterinary surgeons in New Zealand, 69, was amazingly small, said the president of the Dominion Federation of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr K. C. Aekins; at Auckland yesterday. He expressed concern at the large annual stock losses, stating that the cattle population of New Zealand was about 4,630,000, and of this number there were 1,892,000 dairy cows. The estimated annual value of stock and stock products was approximately £60,000,000. Although these figures were high, annual surveys carried out by the New Zealand Dairy Board Herd Record Department indicated that there was an annual wastage in recorded herds of 7.7 per cent. This meant that some 150,000 cows died annually.
