31 Passengers From Stranded Liner
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Thirty-one passengers from the stranded liner Reynella have arrived in Sydney in the liner Merkur. The Reynella ran aground on Jomard Reef, off Papua on August 17 and is still firmly fixed, despite many salvage attempts.
The passengers spent 11 days in the stranded ship. Water was so short that baths and showers were prohibited. The passengers lived mostly on dehydrated potatoes. The ship struck with an audible crash and listed steeply to port. There was some panic among Chinese passengers, but most of the others remained calm.
