AT HAMBURG ON SUNDAY
Jews aboard the Ocean Vigour, the first of three refugee ships due to arrive at Hamburg, will begin disembarkation early on Sunday morning. The Runnymede Park is expected to dock at Hamburg on Monday, and the Empire Rival on Tuesday. The Hamburg regional commissioner (Mr H. V. Berry) said that if emigrants did not leave the ships voluntarily he would order the military to disembark them. He added that food and medical attention would be available. The Jerusalem police said the Stern Gang had warned J 8 Jewish officials in the Palestine Government income, tax department to resign within four days or face drastic consequences.
The United Zionist Council, Ottawa, which claims to speak for all but a
few of Canada’s 170,000 Jews, issued a statement yesterday giving almost unqualified support to the majority report of the United Nations special committee on Palestine, which recommended partition of the Holy Land. The council disagreed with some details of the partition. It contended that difficulties of development and of maintaining order would be increased by awarding portion of Galilee to the Arabs.
The council said that the dependent status of Palestine upon Britain should be ended and that there should be an alliance between Jewish Palestine and Britain.
A New York message says that members of the National Maritime Union are voting in ports throughout the United States on a proposal to give the union’s national office power to invoke boycotts against ships carrying munitions from the United States to Greece, Palestine and Indonesia.
The result of the ballot will be known in a few days.
