Sept. 5 Food .prices have continued their upward rise in many parts of the United States today with prime libs of beef selling up to 77 cents (4/93) per lb, bacon 75. cents (4/B.*), butter 91 cents (5/83), bread 15 cents (llld) a loaf, milk 21 cents (1/33) a quart, eggs about 60 cents (3/9) a 'dozen.
Demanding wage increases and changes in the operation rules, 1800 employees of the United States Steel Corporation and the Union Railroad Company struck today, forcing the virtual closing of four plants producing 20,000 tons of steel daily. all-time record In Chicago corn sold today for 2521 cents a bushel, an all-time record. American railway companies today filed a request with the Interstate Commerce Commission for a further 10 per cent increase in freight rates to offset the 151 0H<1) hourly wage increase recently given to non-operat-ing employees.
The president of the Southern Railway Company (Mr E. E. Norris) said railway companies are “flat broke,” and unless they are permitted to raise fares and freights they will face nationalisation.
“They will be on their way out as an exhibit of America’s free enterprise system,” he said.
