Mr Henry Johnson

OBITUARY

The death of Mr Henry Johnson occurred recently at the home of his son, Mr J. F. Johnson, of Whangarei. Mr Johnson was 87.

Born in Norway in 1860. he made several voyages round the world before the mast, before coming to New Zealand in 1881.

As a young man he saw service with the Chilean Army in a South American war.

In 1895 he married Mary Pelling. grand-daughter of William High, Lord Provost of Edinburgh. There were two sons of the marriage, Mr J. F. Johnson, of Whangarei, and Mr H. H. Johnson, of Palmerston North. Mrs Johnson died 10 years ago. Mr Johnson was associated with the Masonic movement for 65 years, being a Past Master of the Order and a foundation member of Lodge Eketahuna. For several years he was first officer of the St John Ambulance, Waingawa division.

Mr Johnson carried out several formation contracts on the Manawatu railway line and also on the Wairarapa extension from. Masterton.

For the last 17 years he has been living in retirement at his son’s home in Whangarei.
