Former Speaker To Contest Mayoralty

(Special.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Labour Party candidate for the Auckland city mayoralty will be Mr F. W. Schramm, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mr Schramm was defeated in the last general election when his electorate was changed to Parnell. He had represented Auckland East since 1931. Born and educated at Hokitika, he completed his schooling at the Canterj bury University College. He was with | the Justice Department for several years before entering private practise as a barrister and solicitor at Auckland. He unsuccessfully contested the Hamilton seat in 1923 before his entry into Parliament in 1931. He was elected Speaker of the House following the defeat of Mr W. E. Barnard at the 1943 election. The following are the Labour candidates for the City Council: Messrs D. Armishaw, grocer; D. Brophy, union | secretary; A. H. Berry, engineer; W. Butler, tobacconist; H. F. Callagher, footwear worker; H. S. Callagher, union secretary; C. Conroy, City Council employee; P. T. Curran, manager; W. Duncan, Blockhouse Bay; N. Finch, union secretary; G. Forsyth, caretaker; J. T. Jennings, retired tramwayman; F. Johnston, Blockhouse Bay; L. O. Peoples, mercer; P. Richardson, retired chief inspector of the Auckland Transport Board: L, Tucker, costing clerk; E. H. G. Williamson, waterside worker; F. Williams, union secretary; A. Wrathall; Mesdames C. Kelleher, housewife, and R. Wynn, secretary of the women's branch of the Auckland Labour Party. Messrs H. S. Callagher and H. F. Callagher are father and son. Full tickets for the Auckland Harbour Board and the Hospital Board and other local bodies will also be presented.
