(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 1. “THERE is no justification for present stoppages on the coalfields,” said Mr Andrew Naismith, of the Weavers’ Union, opening the TUC debate on the General Council’s declaration on “Miners and the Nation.”
The mineworkers’ secretary (Mr Horner), seconding adoption of the declaration, said workers were needed-in the mines from all sections of the community for the task of resuscitation. “We need help,” Mr Horner said.
The Mineworkers’ Union did not depart in the smallest degree from its demand for full implementation of the miners’ charter. The solution of the crisis was not solely the affair of miners or their union.
from nationalisation to increase production, and it urges the Coal Board and miners to secure an immediate expansion of output. Mr Horner, discussing strikes, said: “The National Union of Mineworkers does not seek to excuse these incidents, but we must try to understand the cause, for we must take it for granted that mineworkers, in general, are absolutely loyal to the Government and the Labour movement.”
The TUC, without dissent, adopted the declaration.
While approving steps taken to improve mining conditions, it says the nation cannot wait for full benefits
