WHANGAREI VITAL STATISTICS Births, marriages anddeathe in Whangarei all decreased last month in comparison with the figures for August last year. Births fell from 53 to 47, deaths from 15 to 14, and marriages from 16 to eight. SHORT COURT SITTING Neither criminal nor traffic cases came before the Whangarei Court at its regular sitting today. Business was confined to one maintenance case. VACANCIES FOR 119 Thirty-seven males and 11 females were placed in employment by the Whangarei Labour and Employment Department last month. Vacancies occur for 67 male workers and 52 female. Disengaged males number six, with no disengaged females.
TOHEROA BEDS “The state of the toheroa beds on the Ninety-mile Beach is still a matter of concern to this department,” states the annual report of the Marine Department. “The beds are taking a long time to recover from the heavy mortality of a few years ago. The position is being closely watched to avoid any over-exploitation.”
FOOTBALLERS INJURED Two Rugby players were admitted to the Whangarei Hospital on Saturday as the result of football injuries. They were Eric Ransome, 19, of Waiotira, who hurt his left knee while playing for Mid-Western against Old Boys, and John Gunson, 20, of Waikiekie, also playing for Mid-Western, who injured his right shoulder. Both patients are making good progress.
