N.Z. Championship

BASKETBALL

(Special.) ‘ NELSON, This Day. Canterbury and Auckland both won their games in the New Zealand’s women’s basketball championships to retain first and second positions on the first grade championship ladder. The Auckland forwards, led by their captain, P. Sullivan, are superior to all others in the tournament, and Miss Sullivan will probably be the No. 1 selection for the New Zealand side. The second and third grade finals were decided this morning. In the second grade Tauranga had a runaway victory over Horowhenua, and in the third grade Nelson beat M&rlborough after a keenly-contested match.

Tauranga (promoted from third which it won last year) becomes holder of the President’s Shield. Nelson becomes the new holder of the Kiwi Trophy. Scores in these finals were:— B Grade: Tauranga 35, Horowhenua 13. C Grade: Nelson 27, Marlborough 19.
