Lavish New Stud Farm
(Special) ROTORUA, This Day. With about £40,000 already invested in it, a stud farm, which will probably be the most expensively stocked and most lavishly equipped in New Zealand is being opened at Broadlands, near Rcporoa. between Rotorua and Taupo. Mr Henri van de Velde, managingdirector of Felt and Textiles of Australia, Ltd., had begun establishing the farm but he died in New York in June and the property will now be developed under his estate.
Known as Otonga, the property is situated partly in open grass land on the Reporoa plains and partly on the scrub slopes of the forested Kaingaroa plateau. A large modern house, reputed to tfb the finest in the whole Rotorua district, now in course of erection, is a feature of the farm.
Although no proper road has yet been built to it, the house will have its own generating plant and modern central heating system.
Air Flight, a French stallion and brother of the Derby winner Airborne, is the nucleus of the horse section of tin? farm. Worth thousands of pounds the stallion is now in England but will arrive in New Zealand soon.
Prize cattle and sheep will also be bred, although no stock has yet been purchased. Mr van de Velde's death delayed the opening of the 1700-acre farm and it is not certain who will now own it, but it is hoped that the property will be operating next year.
