“The nature of these economies must depend to some extent on agreements which have now to be negotiated with the supplying countries.” The announcement said that the monthly allotment of food points already had been reduced from 32 to 28, and further adjustments upwards and downwards in points’ values of various foo(ls would be announced before the beginning of the next ration period on September 14. The Ministry of Food announcement states that the composition of the new meat ration of 12d weekly from September 7 will vary from time to time, according to supplies. “It is not expected that more than 2d worth will be canned me&t and, at times the ration will be all carcase meat.
The tea ration at present is two ounces weekly.
The Government announcement states that from September 14 supplies of foodstuffs to commercial canning establishments would be substantially reduced. The cut would be of the order of 15 to 18 per cent on the existing scale of allowances. These cuts would not apply to canteens in factories and offices, nor to commercial catering establishments which did not charge more than 2/3 a head for any meal, since these establishments catered mainly for industrial and clerical workers lacking canteens.
Steps are being taken to limit the number of, and attendance at, public luncheons and dinners.
A detailed list of luxury foods whose import is to be prohibited will be issued shortly.
Other adjustments in food consumption will be required later and further announcements will be made from time to time.
