Plans For Rotorua Pulp Paper ills
(P.A.) ROTORUA. This Day. Confirmation that the state intends to go ahead with the proposed scheme to'establish a pulp paper mill in the Kaingaroa forest reserves is embodied in a telegram from the member for the Bay of Plenty (Mr W. Sullivan). The telegram is: “Inquiries reveal that the pulp mill proposal is a longterm proposal and may take five or six
vears. “The whole question is wrapped up in a decision on the construction of the Edgecumbe-Murupara railway, the availability of machinery, determination of a suitable site and preparation of plans. “Three or four sites are being investigated. and while nothing is final, the Murupara area must receive consideration because ,of the forest area and the availability of deep water.” A Wellington report that officers of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research have been boring for a natural steam has discounted in Rotorua.
j That district is not in the thermal I steam belt and bores are being sunk to a depth of only about 50ft. Although the idea of a pulp paper mill in the Rotorua area is not entirely new, it is stated in Rotorua ; that many features of the present plan make it rather different from anything j mooted previously. Such an undertaking would involve ! a considerable amount of construction j work in almost completely unde--1 veloped lands.
