NEWS OF THE DAY

£BOO SUBSCRIBED With donations from a number of schools yet to come in, Northland's contribution to the Crippled Children Society’s annual appeal stands at £BOO. The Whangarei Sub-centre's collection has amounted so far to £675, while a band of collectors in Dnrgville nd district raised £125. Pleasure at such a fine result was expressed at a meeting of the Whangarei Sub-centre Committee yesterday, and sincere thanks were extended to all who contributed to such a notable success. NORTHERN WAIROA MEMORIAL A postal ballot conducted by the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Committee resulted in favour of a hall or theatre in Dargaville as the district war memorial. Two proposals were placed before the public, one for the

erection of a hall or theatre to contain a 'community centre and office aud lounge for the Returned Services Association, and also a hall of memories. The other proposal was for a memorial park and sports ground. The votes for the hall scheme totalled 825 and those for the park 547. MILD WINTER WEATHER Spring weather in the depth of winter was the rule in the Far North last week-end, Kaitaia and district experiencing a mild day on Saturday and warm, bright sunshine for much of Sunday, enabling winter outdoor activities to be enjoyed at their best. ■Monday and Tuesday were overcast, but on the second day the weather returned to the south-east and was chilly, with threats of rain. Light showers fell on Monday night. At Kerikeri, last week-end was beautifully fine, with a suggestion of frost on two days.

FAR NORTH ROADS So far this year Far Northern roads have withstood the wet winter conditions better than last year, when heavy autumn rains caused marked deterioration of surfaces. Although pot-holes are prevalent on many county roads, most rough running is confined to the surface, there being comparatively few cases of collapsed foundations, which threatened to block several routes last winter. A troublesome slip on Fern Flat road in eastern Mangonui County has washed out and is partially blocking the formation, but a temporary deviation is available and traffic has not been held up.
