2426 British Merchant Ships Lost In War

(Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 4. THE total number of British merchant ships lost by enemy action during the war was 2426, with a gross tonnage of 11,331,933.

Of these, 1332, with a gross tonnage of 7,595,645, were destroyed by Üboats; 296, with a gross tonnage of 816,255, by mines; 209. with a gross tonnage of 969,087, by surface craft; 383, with a gross tonnage of 1,575,230,

by aircraft; and 206, with a gross tonnage of 375,716, by other or unknown causes. The heaviest losses were suffered in 1941. In addition, 136 fishing vessels, of 24,525 tons, were lost.
