Someone Announced Outbreak Of War

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. ‘This is station 2ZB, Wellington, calling the people of New Zealand.

“Britain has declared war on-(Rus-sia. Here are the reasons ” This was the text of an announcement heard by a Wellington resident on the wireless on Sunday night.

The resident said the announcement was made at about 8.55 p.m. from a wavelength close to 2YA.

The message was quite clear on the air but he thought the whole thing was a joke because the “reasons for declaring war were silly, anyway.”

An official of the Post and Telegraph Department* said no reports of the broadcast had been received, but it was not unlikely. “We have been getting into trouble from people who bought transmitting sets from the War Assets Realisation Board,” he said.

“The majority of the sets have a limited range so it is unlikely that (lie broadcast was heard over a wide area if it came from one of these sets."
