Australia Seeks Manus Trusteeship
CANBERRA. This Day Australia was seeking United Nations trusteeship of Manus Island and, under the provisions of trusteeship, would be permitted to fortify it said a Government spokesman. The island is at present held under the New Guinea mandate. Authoritative sources state that the United States Government has no intention of spending money on Manus under any agreement with the Commonwealth. The island figures high in the priorities for Australian defence spending.
