N.Z. Jersey Association Reviews Year's Work

(Special). AUCKLAND, This Day. With a total membership of 2746 the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association is the largest dairy breed society in the Southern Hemisphere and the second largest in the world. Mr L. A. Higgins, of Nelson, president of the association, said this in his report to the 45th annual meeting yesterday.

Registration during the year totalled 23.714. representing an increase of 599 males and 1801 females compared with the previous year's figures. A record number of transfers were made, no fewer than 15,592 Jersey cattle changing hands. A loss of £1390 in the association’s finances was largely attributable to the readjustment of policy in allocating certificate of registration subsidy. Mr Fliggins said it was regrettable that proposed improvement, which required the entry of every sound cow for either COR or on highest test by April 1, had not yet been implemented by the Dairy Division. NORTHLAND REP. The number of COR tested cows had increased from 942 to 1500 since 1944 and during the same period the number of OUT animals had risen from 3386 to 7900.

The best Individual performance during the year had been the production of 1001.69 lb of butterfat by Oaklea Pompous, HC, owned by Mr A. C. Smith, of Hamilton. Mr Higgins emphasised the necessity for keeping high production and type together. It was resolved to place restrictions on the standards of animals that could be transferred to other breeders. The officer in charge of testing with the Dairy Division (Mr H. G. Philpott) said the department regretted the delays in the issuing of returns of tests. Staff shortages were the trouble.

The council was given authority to charge the cost of holding inquiries into any proved breaches of its rules against the offenders. It was also asked to hold field days in the various districts so that young breeders could be Wained in the classification of dairy types. Messrs C. S. Leggett, of Northland, and Mr R. C. Leach, of Woodville, the two retiring councillors, were reelected.
