Importing Of Shoes From Steeling Area
(Epecial.) WELLINGTON,. This Day. Four hundred thousand pairs ot snoes can now be imported into New Zealand from the sterling areas. Advice oi the intention of the Minister cf Customs (Mr JNordmeyer) to issue licences has been received by ihe planning committee of me footwear industry. The industry in New Zealand, exempt the importing section, was denmtely antagonistic to the proposal to import supplies from overseas, said Mr J. A. East, vice-president of the committee, last night. The industry claimed that it could meet tne demand in the Dominion, and the planning * committee, which acted in an advisory capacity' to the Bureau cf Industry, had made recommendations on those lines. The committee realised that there was a temporary shortage, but considered that the slack could be taken up within the next few months. Importng from overseas meant that approximately 140 operatives would be temporarily lost to the footwear industry for every 100.000 pairs of shoes imported.
