(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 3. London has now had five successive days on which the temperature has reached 85 or higher.
This is a 73-year record, according to statistics kept at Kew. , The temperature today at 2 p.m. wasX 92. I The top temperature recorded todau was 97 in the shade at Bury St Edmunds. During the heat wave London’s water consumption today rose by 22,000.000 gallons to a new record of 428,000,000. Many areas were without water.
The temperature of 93.5 in the shade at Greenwich Observatory at 3 p.m. was the highest for June for 72 years. The highest temperature eyer recorded at Greenwich was 100 in August, 1911. A Rugby League match, in which Oldham defeated Liverpool Stanley 14 — 9 ; was played in four 20-minute phases because of the heat.
