"The racing people have made it public that they contemplate developing the Kensington grounds. They have the right to do this and occupy the grounds in perpetuity," he added.
He moved that the council should ascertain it the Whangarei Racing Club would receive a deputation from the council to see if it would relinquish the grounds, the motion being carried.

In no other town in New Zealand was a racecourse as close to the centre of the town as in Whangarei said Cr J. F. Johnson. It would not be a disadvantage for the club to go as far as Tikipimga and it was sporting enough to sec this point. This discussion was only a preliminary.
It would be a lengthy time, perhaps 10 years, before the club could make a complete change, suggested Cr S. J. Snow. He added that it would be probably expensive to compensate the club for moving.
Over a period of years such a change could be made. Cr Johnson considered.
