He Likes Jockeys

Not often does a cleric mourn the departure from his fold of racing men. But Canon F. B. C. Birch, of Brisbane, does. Several leading jockeys who lived in his area moved to southern states and he did not like it. After 45 trainers, jockeys, apprentices and stable hands had met in the hall of his church to form a social and recreational club, and had elected him chairman of the management committee, he said :

"Many people believe that trainers, jockeys and stable hands are a ‘crook’ lot. but. having lived in this district for many years, I know that is wrong. ‘‘The police will tell you that the conduct of the racing people here is exemplary."
