Widespread Raids In China
(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI. June 2. Police and military took concerted action over a wide area against students today, raids being carried out at Mukden, Hangchow, Wuchang, Foochow, Kaifeng, Chungking and Tientsin.
The newspaper Takungpao said two students were killed and two others injured at Chungking, where troops arrested 1000 suspects in a midnight raid.
Twelve students were arrested at Hangchow, 20 at Tientsin. 32 at Foochow and an undisclosed number at Kaifeng.
Many clashes occurred in which students, police and soldiers were injured. Three students at Hankow were killed, several others injured, and a number arrested when police and Government plain-clothes agents invaded Wuhan University and clashed with undergraduates. Hundreds- of people were arrested in a city-wide sweep at Chungking last night during a suddenly-imposed period of martial law.
Those taken from their homes and places of work included eight members of the staff of the Chungking edition of the Liberal Ta Kung Pao, generally rated as China’s leading newspaper, and seven from the Liberal New People’s Daily, including the editor.
In Canton, 2000 parading students of the Sun Yat Sen University clashed with Government agents. Scores were beaten and a number arrested. The Communist radio in North Shensi said the general strike would mark the opening of a “second front” against the Government.
