Easter In The Churches
Special Easter services were held in Whangarei Churches yesterday. At Christ Church there were large congregations at the celebrations of Holy Communion at 7 a.m., 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. At the 11 a.m. service the celebrant was the Bishop of Auckland (the Kt. Rev. W. J. Simkin).
The service was largely attended by parents with their children, and special reference to this aspect was made by the bishop in his address. The church was beautifully decorated.
The Presbyterian Church services were attended by a number of visitors to Whangarei. The Rev. T. H. Burton preached. Masses were celebrated at 7 and 10 a.m. at St Francis Xavier's Church and benediction at 7 p.m. Sermons were preached by the Rev. Father O’Leary on the resurrection of Christ and its application to people at Easter time.
A the Methodist Church the 11 o’clock service was conducted by Mr R. Tapp, while at the Oruaiti (Leigh Memorial) Chapel the morning service was by the Rev. G. E. Brown. The evening service at the Bank Street Church was also led by Mr Brown, and the soloist was Miss A. J. Hills. Services conducted by the Rev. E. F. Shcrburd were held at the Whangarei Baptist Tabernacle at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and communion by Mr Gwyn. At the morning service the preacher was Mr Budd and in the evening the sermon was delivered by Mr El. White. At the Trinity Congregational Church, Kensington, special Easter sermons on “The Choice of the Cross” and “The Choice Vindicated” were preached by Mr V. N. Relf. The Salvation Army also conducted special services at their citadel in Rust Lane on “The Dawn of a Now Day” and "The Victory of the Empty Tomb.”
